Screentime Agreements create healthy boundaries and limit power struggles by setting clear, written guidelines for each family. How?
Kids learn independence and accountability
Kids set own rewards and consequences
Kids practice real world agreements early
What to do:
Spend 30 mins to sit down and discuss a reasonable screentime routine per week.
What to say:
‘I’ve noticed screentime has been stressful for us. I don’t like yelling and I think you would like some independence. Let’s make an agreement in writing to make it clear and fair for both of us. Our agreement will cover xyz, and will be on this wall if we need a reminder of what we agreed on. We can always revisit the agreement if it’s not working well.’
You’ll discuss…
How many minutes of screentime per day?
Weekdays or weekends only?
Which platforms or shows can they use (i.e. Netflix, Youtube)?
What are the consequences of not honouring the contract? Let kids set this one.
Prepare a timer to ensure kids stick to their screentime routine.
Once you and your child sign the Screentime Agreement, put it up on the wall to revisit anytime.
